Associate Consultant
Mayo Clinic
Sheharyar Sarwar is a Consultation-Liaison psychiatry fellow. After taking the poetic route to medicine (literally), he completed his psychiatry residency at Penn State Health. His academic interests are rooted in his connection with Pakistan and his experiences as an immigrant, navigating a new language and a new culture during his formative years. Appreciating the way emotions get lost in translation, through his own life experiences and his study of creative writing and literature, Sheharyar became interested in exploring how different patient populations express emotional distress. Returning to his roots, he has made two recent trips to Pakistan to hold an outpatient psychiatry clinic in a small town in Punjab, gathering data on mental health trends and idioms of distress in the local population. After completing his CL fellowship, he is currently working as an associate consultant, splitting his time between emergency psychiatry and CL services.
