Comprehensive HIV care includes both physical and mental health components. From youths affected by vertical transmission to “long term survivors”, individuals living with HIV can face unique mental health related challenges in different stages of their life and care. Throughout the lifespan, psychiatrists play an instrumental role in supporting patients living with HIV by understanding and addressing the complex interactions between access and delivery of care, culture, and social determinants of health. This panel offered by the ACLP SIG on HIV/AIDS Psychiatry will draw on evidence and experiences to discuss, through cases and audience interaction, the salient challenges and triumphs pertinent to caring for those living with HIV across the life span from children to older adults Panel : Dr. Luis Pereira is an assistant professor of psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Centre and co-chair of the HIV Psychiatry Sig. He is the Moderator on this symposium. Dr. Alexandra Canetti is Alexandra Canetti, MD, is a board-certified child and adolescent and adult psychiatrist, working at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in NYC, with expertise in chronic medical illness, including HIV. She will discuss the impact of HIV in children and adolescents, including issues related to perinatal HIV, disclosure and stigma. Dr. Alan Wai is an HIV psychiatrist embedded in the Immunodeficiency Clinic at Toronto General Hospital, Canada, and is one of the ECP Co-Chair of the HIV/AIDS Psychiatry SIG. He will share cases and pearls germane to the HIV mental health care of younger adults including how care can be impacted by trauma and attachment, by co-morbid psychiatric and substance use disorders, and by social determinants of health. Dr. Gabrielle Marzani is an HIV psychiatrist at the University of Virginia’s Ryan White Clinic. June 2024 marks 25 years in this multi-disciplinary clinic and the aging of both her and her patients- many now over 65 years old. She will share cases and lessons-learned in these long-term relationships, their special needs, and the psychological implications of their “long term survivorship”.
Dr. Sunbal Ashraf is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in Memphis, TN. She works in a collaborative care model with infectious disease specialists providing psychiatric care to persons living with HIV funded through the Ryan White Program. She will review the unique challenges of the adolescent population who are in a nodal transitional point of care from the pediatric to adult system, and what can contribute to positive outcomes for this vulnerable group from her experiences.Learning Objectives:
