Psychiatrist
Mayo Clinic
Dr. Laura Suarez completed her medical education at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia, and worked as a general practitioner in an underserved community. She completed a research fellowship in the Cardiac Psychiatry Research Program at Massachusetts General Hospital. Afterward, Dr. Suarez completed her Psychiatry residency at Mayo Clinic, where she served as chief resident. After completing the Consultation-Liaison Fellowship, she moved on to the Clinician-Investigator Training Program at Mayo Clinic, where she completed a qualitative study to characterize psychosocial distress in patients with heart failure. Dr. Suarez has contributed significantly to the psychiatry department's diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, leading curriculum development and delivery of culturally sensitive psychiatry practice for trainees. Clinically, her focus is outpatient Consultation-Liaison services, mainly Psychocardiology. She joined the Mayo Clinic Psychiatry and Psychology Department faculty to develop and expand the mental health care for patients with underlying cardiovascular disease, as well as continue to provide psychiatric care to other medically ill patient populations. The focus of her research has been on psychocardiology. She has recently developed a project geared toward bringing this line of research to Latinx communities to close the existing healthcare disparities gap and has received funding for it through the Center for Chronic Disease Reduction and Equity Promotion across Minnesota (C2DREAM). Notably, she has published over 20 articles and received numerous accolades for her outstanding clinical, academic, and humanitarian achievements.
