Dr. David Karol is a dually trained psychiatrist and internal medicine specialist at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine. He completed medical school at Case Western Reserve University and a combined residency in internal medicine and psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center. At UC, Dr. Karol is the vice chair of clinical services in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience. He has a secondary appointment in the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Karol’s clinical interests include consultation-liaison psychiatry, general internal medicine, integrated medical and psychiatric care, HIV psychiatry, and treatment of vulnerable populations, particularly individuals involved with the criminal justice system. He is involved in medical student and residency education in both departments. He is the faculty mentor for the Psychiatry Morbidity, Mortality, and Improvement Conferences presented by psychiatry residents. Dr. Karol is involved in research in consultation-liaison and HIV psychiatry. His research interests include the use of technology and artificial intelligence for early identification and opportunities for both acute and proactive psychiatric consultation in medical settings. He is currently working toward obtaining his Master of Science degree in clinical and translational science with anticipated graduation at the end of 2023. Finally, he recently took a Performance Improvement Leaders course at UC Health where he focused on accurate and timely assessment of psychiatric conditions in primary care and other nonpsychiatric ambulatory settings; the work is ongoing.
