Dr. John-Jose Nunez is a clinical research fellow at BC Cancer and UBC Mood Disorders, with the Department of Psychiatry at The University of British Columbia. He recently completed his residency in psychiatry at the same institution, and is a certified psychiatrist. During residency he completed a master's degree in computer science, focusing on applying artificial intelligence to medicine. His clinical interests are in mood disorders and cancer psychiatry. His research interests are in using computational tools such as natural language processing and other machine learning techniques with clinical data to help mental health patients. In particular, his recent work has looked at applying natural language processing to identify addressable mental health needs in cancer patients, as well as predicting other cancer outcomes such as survival. His work has been published in high-impact journals such as JAMA Network Open, and has been featured in the media including in Vancouver Sun, CBC, Toronto Star, and Medscape News.
