Laurel Mayer is a Professor of Psychiatry at CUIMC, and the Director of the NYP-House Staff Mental Health Service, Columbia campus, co-founder of CopeColumbia and faculty member of member of the Columbia Center for Eating Disorders at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. My research foci are reflective of my clinical interests: obesity and eating disorders as well as physician mental health. My current research in obesity focuses on using a comprehensive evaluation of eating behavior in conjunction with physiologic and metabolic assessments to better understand processes that promote weight regain (after successful behavioral weight loss) in individuals with obesity. With respect to physician mental health, my current research evaluates the feasibility and acceptability of 1:1 check ins as support to trainees during residency. My broader goal is to use the research to develop structures and programs addressing the mental health spectrum from wellness to psychiatric illness thereby providing maximal support to our students, residents, fellows and faculty.
