Dr. Badr Ratnakaran is an assistant professor and geriatric psychiatrist at Carilion Clinic-Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Dr. Ratnakaran also serves as the medical director of CONNECT, 24-hour emergency evaluation and referral service of Carilion Clinic. He is the President-Elect of the Psychiatric Society of Virginia. He completed his general psychiatry residency training and fellowship in geriatric psychiatry from Carilion Clinic-Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. As a trainee, Dr. Ratnakaran has served as a PRITE fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists, and the Vice-Chair of the APA Leadership fellowship. He is an awardee of the Honors Scholar Program of the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP), the Trainee Travel Award of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (ACLP), the Association of Academic Psychiatry’s (AAP) Resident Psychiatric Educator Award, and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He has served as a guest editor for the American Journal of Psychiatry Residents Journal and is currently an Editorial Fellow of the AMA Journal of Ethics for creating an edition on “Mental Health Care of Older Adults”. At present, he serves as a member of the APA Council of Geriatric Psychiatry, the Maintenance of Certification Sub- Committee of the ACLP, and the Membership Committee and Master Educator Committee of AAP. Dr. Ratnakaran’s main areas of interest include Geriatric Psychiatry, Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, Academic Psychiatry, Physician Wellness, and Psychiatry in Arts and Media.
